Nine Walkers
The Fellowship of the Ring
Formed at the Council of Elrond in Rivendell on 25 October, T.A. 3018, the Fellowship comprised nine members — one for each of the Nine Rings of mortal Men. Three Elves, four Hobbits, two Men, and one Dwarf set out from Rivendell to destroy the One Ring.
Ring-bearer
Origin: Bag End, The Shire · Age: 50 at the start of the Quest
“I will take the Ring, though I do not know the way.”
Reluctant hero and Ring-bearer of the Third Age. Frodo inherited the One Ring from his uncle Bilbo and bore its ever-increasing weight from the Shire to the Crack of Doom. Quiet, brave, and profoundly compassionate — his mercy towards Gollum ultimately determined the fate of Middle-earth.
Esquire of Frodo, later Mayor of the Shire
Origin: Hobbiton, The Shire · Age: 38 at the start of the Quest
“I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!”
Gardener, loyal companion, and the true hero of The Lord of the Rings in Tolkien's own view. Sam never wavered. He carried Frodo up the slopes of Mount Doom when the Ring's weight had broken him, and returned home to plant a silver seed in every corner of the Shire.
The Grey / The White
Origin: Valinor (the Undying Lands) · Age: Ancient beyond reckoning
“You shall not pass!”
One of the five Istari wizards sent by the Valar to guide the peoples of Middle-earth. Gandalf the Grey fell fighting a Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, was sent back as Gandalf the White, and ultimately guided the Free Peoples to victory. The architect of the War of the Ring.
Strider / King Elessar Telcontar
Origin: Rivendell · Age: 87 at the time of the War of the Ring
“I am Aragorn son of Arathorn, and if by life or death I can save you, I will.”
Chieftain of the Dúnedain and rightful heir to the thrones of Gondor and Arnor — an inheritance he bore quietly for decades, disguised as a Ranger of the North. He led the Army of the Dead through the Paths of the Dead and took the throne as Elessar, the Elfstone, King of the Reunited Kingdom.
Prince of the Woodland Realm
Origin: Mirkwood · Age: Several thousand years
“They are taking the Hobbits to Isengard!”
Son of King Thranduil of Mirkwood and the Elven representative of the Fellowship. His preternatural sight, speed, and archery saved his companions countless times. His friendship with Gimli the Dwarf — unprecedented in the long history of Elven-Dwarven mistrust — became legendary.
Son of Glóin, Lord of the Glittering Caves
Origin: Erebor, the Lonely Mountain · Age: 139 at the time of the War of the Ring
“Nobody tosses a Dwarf.”
Dwarf warrior and son of Glóin (of Bilbo's company). His wonder at the caves of Aglarond — the Glittering Caves of Helm's Deep — moved him to tears, and he later became their lord. His deep friendship with Legolas healed an ancient rift between their peoples.

Boromir
Man (Dúnedain of Gondor)
Captain-General of Gondor
Origin: Minas Tirith · Age: 40 at the time of the War of the Ring
“One does not simply walk into Mordor.”
Eldest son of Denethor II and heir to the Stewardship of Gondor. He came to Rivendell seeking the sword re-forged, remained for the Quest, and ultimately fell to the Ring's corruption — attempting to take it from Frodo. He redeemed himself defending Merry and Pippin, falling to three Uruk-hai arrows at Amon Hen.

Meriadoc Brandybuck
Hobbit
Master of Buckland
Origin: Buckland, The Shire · Age: 36 at the start of the Quest
“I have a gift… I'm going to give it to you.”
Merry proved himself on the fields of the Pelennor, riding with the Rohirrim and helping Éowyn slay the Witch-king of Angmar — whose undead body could not be slain by mortal man, but Merry's enchanted blade severed the sinew of his existence.
Thain of the Shire
Origin: Tuckborough, The Shire · Age: 28 at the start of the Quest
“I didn't think it would end this way.”
The youngest and most impulsive member of the Fellowship, Pippin grew into his courage at the Siege of Minas Tirith, fighting in the Guard of the Citadel. His curiosity (and the Palantír) accidentally helped Gandalf understand Sauron's plans. He became Thain of the Shire in the Fourth Age.
